Kest is not defeated by proving his arithmetic false. The correction really does harm people who never chose it, and he is allowed to name that remainder accurately. His danger is the conviction that a sufficiently sophisticated model can decide whose suffering may be hidden. Even after the system changes, his expertise remains useful—a deliberately uncomfortable ending.
